The perfectly microwaved boiled egg.

Making the perfect boiled egg isn't easy--especially in a microwave, since eggs tend to explode under pressure. That's why someone invented this beautiful, egg-shaped, yellow-and-white microwave egg cooker. The device actually fits 3 mid-sized eggs, which are placed on an aluminum tray. Put 130cc of water in the yellow part, insert the tray, place the eggs on it, close the lid (the white part), and pop it in the microwave. 8 minutes in a 500W microwave gets you soft-boiled, 10 minutes gets you hard-boiled. Created by Yoshikawa Group.

So, insead of putting 3 eggs in a pan of water and boiling for 3 minutes on the stovetop to get a soft boiled egg, I would have to measure 130cc of water, place eggs in a tray, place the tray in the device, attach the cover, put it in the microwave oven, set the time for 8 minutes, and wait 5 minutes longer than if I had boiled the eggs on the stovetop. Am I missing something here? Since when is substituting a simple procedure that takes 3 minutes for one that takes 8 minutes plus assembly time logical? This is the dumbest new bit of unnecessary kitchen clutter gizmo since the crappy Presto Pizzazz rotating pizza baking thingy my step mother was giving out for xmas a few years ago, an equally inane and unnecessary device.

You can buy these at any walmart, k-mart, target, Cooking store or basically any place that sells microwaves...

These things are so old... (and cheap! less than 3$ at walmart) that I can't believe they made the news...

Basically every cooking company you can think of makes one that looks exactly the same as this one...

logical: Don't forget the time it takes for the water to come to a boil on the stovetop... 8 minutes in the microwave isn't too bad.

Color me confused... Did someone just say microwave and aluminum?

the ones on sale in Walmart require you to remove the shell etc...
then you have to wash the yolky plastic afterwards.

Also cooking on the stove can be impossible to correctly get your egg cooked to right amount

Aluminum (or other metals) absorb a lot of the energy. If the metal has pointy parts, they will act as antennas and cause arcing. Smoothly rounded metal won't arc. I suspect the aluminum absorbs the energy and channels heat to the water at the bottom. Aluminum would be a good heat conductor for that and the eggs would get steamed.

I use one of these - works perfectly every time (and cooks more eggs, enough for the whole family) :-)

logical: yes you are missing the fact that many Japanese living in the cities have very small apartments and may not have a stove top, or at best a totally useless one. Most people however do have a microwave oven.

Why in God's name would you want to use 500w of energy for 10 mins, when boiling water can do the same job in 3 mins using far less energy - stupid..... I suppose laziness, gimmicks and stupidity reign.

The big question is: How does it work?
I think the aluminum is used to shield most, if not all, of the eggs from microwave radiation. Thus the microwave ist just used to heat the water to boiling point, with the 100C water steam actually cooking the eggs. The eggs are therefore not cooked by the microwave but indirectly via the water steam.
There are systems out there which cook eggs directly with microwave radiation, but they depend on you putting the egg white and yolk into a plastic cup (which is in XXXL egg-shape for show-effect).

500W for 10 minutes isn't a whole lot of energy. You will use more than that boiling water and cooking an egg on a stove. Keep in mind that an electric kettle uses around 1000W, and a small stove element, 1200W.

11/17/2006 12:37:00 PM
Blogger mj said...

You also have to keep in mind that for 500W microwave power you'll need at least 1000W electrical power from the mains. The conversion of electricity directly to heat is bloody efficient, thus a specialised egg cooker should be the ecologists choice. If you take m. salmonella into the equation, the situation may change...

To make the perfect hard-boiled egg on a stovetop:
cover eggs in cold water
heat until boiling
turn off heat and cover
let stand for 17 minutes

I don't always want to wait that long. I might pick one of these up.

I am a bit late coming to this thread but you all seemed like the nicest folk to benefit from my observations. Finding myself with a fridge, kettle, microwave and six organic eggs and not being too eager to cook the eggs in the kettle I embarked on a web search to find out about doing the eggs in the microwave. That is what brought me here. Having got thoroughly hacked of by the dogmatism of the prevailing "don't do it, they explode" brigade a small experiment ensued.
Before going to bed I took one egg from the fridge to allow it to come to room temperature overnight. This could be counter productive in the winter. In the morning I boiled the kettle, made a mug of tea and half filled another mug with hot water. I then pierced the egg shell at the round end where there is the small air filled cavity and placed the egg in the mug of hot water with half a teaspoon of salt. Slapped it in the microwave for three minutes on full and went to have a shower. Probably around twenty minutes later I took the egg out of the water (sorry didn't time it) and left it for another ten minutes or so while I ironed a shirt.
The result a perfectly cooked hard boiled egg, set yolk, fluffy tender white. Next time I shall reduce the standing time as I like a slightly runny yolk. No it didn't explode, it didn't crack, not even a thread of white where I punctured the shell. Ok from start to finish may have been ten hours but total time of intrusion into my routine was probably around a minute. Not bad for the almost perfect egg!

Logical... if you had a child in a dorm at college that does have a microwave but does not have a stove you might find yourself less critical of such kitchen gizzmos. Thank God not everyone thinks as you and invented such a thing!

Below is how to make the perfect hard OR SOFT egg in micro in 3-4 minutes total, no gizmos (except a little foil)- but OUT of the shell only. Sorry, devilers,
---
Logical, I'm with you - waste of space & money, do-nothing gizmo.
Yellow plastic bottom lets microwaves in to boil water and steam the eggs above, which are blocked from microwaves by the metal hood. Whatever.

Tom, I got hungry reading yours so I launched my OWN experiment - at 3:10 in the I.M. (insomniac morning).

By 3:20 I had eaten the eggs and rinsed out the bowl... microwave cooked, not one but TWO, one hard boiled and one soft!

I just read this at a similarly googled site - crack it into a bowl!

We're making boiled eggs to eat, I assume, not to make deviled eggs out of.

Cover bowl with paper towel. I nuked on high 25 secs, then
moved the bowl an inch or so (evenly heating it is crucial, and rotating blades and even rotating dishes still cook in "patterns" on the food, which moving solves). Nuke 15 more and stop it and look for doneness. Do 15 more if not.

45 to 90 secs total, you will have a boiled egg. Your total time will vary between 45-90 because of your bowl material, power of your oven, age of magnetron inside it, etc.

Second one I made reminded me of a very old trick I used for SOFT-boiled: I ripped a little square of foil off the roll and just quickly hand-crunched it to make a "coin" big enough to just cover the yolk, placing it over the yolk for the last 15 secs only.

Remove foil - but if pleading criminally insane, eat it.

MMM-mm, that egg was good with salt/spice to taste.

Yes, metal is happy in a microwave. Aluminum foil on the wingtips of your turkey (Turkey? Microwaved? THE most tender juicy and delicious. Gotta fit the bird though. Fancy micro with internal thermometer probe is best) will also deflect the microwaves, keeping the wings from burning.

Exceptions are, as noted, must keep metal away from all sides of oven to avoid spark/fire. Don't be too far if using metal - if you have any points or long parts sticking out made of metal, they will act as an antenna and may also spark/flame.

Some metals reflect but others absorb and thus get very hot. Not sure which metals but I do know alum foil has 1001 uses in micro.

Tom, the hot water was cooking your egg in the mug even before pressing go, so to get the same results one would have to use the same amount and temp of water, the same amount of time for each of your steps. etc. But the most amazing was that you put it in the micro IN THE SHELL! I had an egg OUT of shell in bowl around 30-35 seconds and it popped pretty loud and splattered the walls of the nuker. Solution was to cook 25, move it, cook 15 (or less) at a time after that, checking doneness. The fe seconds opening the door and moving the food is enough delay to slow the overall cooking process and avoid the pop. Your mug water and stand times slowwwwed cooking way down, thus preventing popping. but no way *I* would try an egg in shell without water, hole or not.

The good news is that once you get your time/technique defined, you're set for life of oven for your favorite "boiled" egg!

That made a real good soft boiled egg. Making that foil coin took 15 seconds including going to the pantry. I tucked it away to save 14 seconds next time. Thanks

HEY EVERYONE WHO IS ANYONE needs to read THIS thread.
I googled 'how to cook an egg in a microwave' and got doezens of sites saying 'Dont do it! the egg will EXPLODE!".
to all those who have done it and ended up with an exploding egg- YOU PUT IT IN TOO LONG!.
I just boiled an egg, for no more than 3 and a half minutes, and it came out perectly- from the microwave! no piercing the air pocket, no wrapping in anything.
I just put an egg in a microwave safe dish (no lid), filled up about 2cm past the egg with cold water, and 3 an a half mins later - VOILA perfect boiled egg :)

Does ANYONE here watch Alton Brown? Put four eggs IN the electric kettle... turn it on... when it clicks off... time it for 15 minutes... then take out the hot water and pour cold water over it. Wait for the eggs to be cooled and yer done. Perfect every time.
